Kid’s adventure author sends message in a bottle for summer reading .

Max Elliot Anderson, author of action-adventures and mysteries for kids, has begun a real life adventure to encourage summer reading. On Saturday, May 31, he released a special bottle into the Rock River, near his home of Rockford, Illinois.

“Since most of my books contain adventures, and are written especially for boys 8 - 12, I wanted to do something different this summer, to point out the importance of reading in America. That’s because I grew up hating to read.” His blog, Books for Boys, ranks in the top 10 searches on Google.

He placed the bottle into the river, downstream from a spillway. “I know there are lots of hazards and obstacles in the rivers,” Anderson said. “But I’m hoping my bottle makes its way to the end of the Rock River, and into the Mississippi. If it gets that far, then who knows?”

The large, clear, plastic bottle is decorated with blue tape. Inside is a special card. When the card is returned to the author, he will send a set of his books to the person who found it. Also included is a forever stamp. “That way,” he said, “it won’t cost the finder anything to claim the prize, no matter when they pull it out of the water.”

The prize card includes instructions for proper disposal of the bottle, or recycling. “I don’t consider my message-bottle to be litter since I’m confident someone will find it one of these days.”

This summer adventure is in keeping with what young readers have reported, after reading Max Elliot Anderson’s books. “Reading one of your books is like being in an exciting or scary movie,” several have said.

“It’s vital,” Anderson said, “that we teach our children to turn off the TV, put away the video games, move away from the computer, and pick up a book. Reading helps to exercise the imagination in ways that nothing else can.” His books include North Woods Poachers, Mountain Cabin Mystery, Big Rig Rustlers, Secret of Abbott’s Cave, and Legend of the White Wolf. “Each book has completely different characters, and takes place in a different part of the country,” he said.

Anderson’s books have been compared by readers and reviewers to Tom Sawyer, The Hardy Boys, Huck Finn, Nancy Drew, Tom Swift, Scooby-Doo, Lemony Snicket, and adventure author Jack London. His books are equally enjoyed by boys and girls.

Anderson’s prize bottle could possibly make its way past Moline, and Davenport, to St. Louis, past Memphis, and all the way to New Orleans. “Hopefully someone will fish it out of the river before it gets to the Gulf,” he said with a smile.

“What better way to get kids excited about the adventure of reading, than to give them a real adventure this summer?” Anderson asked. He encourages young readers, who live along the Rock and Mississippi rivers, to be on the lookout for the bottle.

Reluctant Readers Unite

Over the course of the past 21 months, my publisher, Tweener Press, www.tweenertime.com has released 7 of my books intended first for reluctant boy readers 8 – 13. A lot has happened in those months.

On Friday, June 24th, I was the guest on the Moody Broadcast network program, Open Line. This was a one hour live interview and call in program. Some were even adults.

My name is Max Elliot Anderson. The first thing you should know about me is that I grew up as a reluctant reader. Even now I don't like to read for enjoyment. This was complicated by the fact that my father has authored over 70 books. Several of these were children’s books.

But what is even more amazing is that I am now writing Christian chapter adventure books for reluctant readers ages 8 and up. How did this happen?

A few years ago I began to experience a slowdown in my professional video production business. This caused me to take a step back in order to evaluate my circumstances and to chart a course for the future. I decided to do some research to better understand why I had not become a reader when I was younger.

Something else you should know is that I graduated from college with a degree in Psychology. This had been a fantastic area of study for my curious mind. It also served, I think, to push me toward a better understanding of my lack of interest in reading.

My life had been surrounded by the visual arts. As a very young boy, I can remember my father editing films in the basement of our home. Some of the craziest sounds you ever heard used to drift up the stairs from that basement.

I often spent hours sitting quietly on the movie sets while dramatic films were being shot. You could say that the bug bit me very early. At the age of 8 I was "killed" by a hit-and-run driver while riding on my bike. Since the movie I was in at the time was filmed in black and white, my blood was made from chocolate syrup. Yum. I can still taste it.

Anyway, that early exposure to film making seemed to suggest a life for myself in the same field. For more than forty years, that's exactly what I did. My production credits can be seen by going to: http://maxvideoinfo.blogspot.com/

But as I said, my production work slowed in recent years. Through research into my reluctant reading I discovered some patterns that suggested why I had this problem.

The books I’m writing now were first intended for reluctant boy readers, and they love them. So do avid boy readers, girls, and even adults. This larger group surprised me. As I’ve written each manuscript, I see them more like movies and not books. The reason for this is hard to explain. But readers tell me that reading one of my books is like watching an exciting or scary movie.
